FUN FACTS ABOUT MARGARITAS
If we had a dollar for every time we’ve been asked to share the Rio Grande margarita recipe we’d be offering meals for free (hint: no, it does not include Everclear!). Our Classic Rio margarita recipe is top secret, but there are a lot of margarita facts that we’d be happy to share with our fellow marg enthusiasts!
Where did the margarita recipe come from?
The margarita originated in the ‘30s or ‘40s along the Mexico/US border near Juarez or Tijuana. Margarita is the Spanish word for daisy and legend has it that a bar owner created the drink for a local showgirl after he couldn’t remember how to make the “Magnolia” cocktail she had ordered.
Why do margaritas have salt on the rim?
Salt can enhance the sweet and sour flavors of a margarita for some palettes, making it an enjoyable experience they won’t forget.
What makes the Rio margarita so special?
Our famous Rio margarita has earned its reputation because of its refreshing taste and perfect, tangy balance of sweet, salty and sour flavor profiles. We believe simplicity is what makes a margarita great, which is why we focus on lime, tequila and orange liqueur. The Classic Rio Margarita on the rocks is the drink that put us on the map and it’s still our most popular option.
We also serve many margarita variations, including different fruit flavorings – like the Watermelon Marg available each summer and Blood Orange Margarita in February – and serve them frozen, coin-style, skinny, and spicy. The Cadillac is also still popular, though it’s not featured on our current menu.
Oh, and yes, we still suggest a Limit 3 when it comes to our margaritas. They’re smooth and refreshing, but they sure do pack a powerful punch!
