Our first employee, Felipe, joined us in 1986, even before the Rio officially opened. He had been working as a dishwasher at a friend’s restaurant, and we brought him on board to help. A man of few words, Felipe hailed from Harlingen, Texas, with Spanish as his first language. He often responded with just a nod or a couple of words. We only later discovered Felipe spoke excellent English when he wanted, often surprising us with funny, unexpected replies. When faced  with a challenge, he’d simply shake his head and say, “Not to worry.” His dedication to the Rio was unwavering.

With his knack for entertaining the crew, Felipe often performed dances or mimed to make us laugh.  His antics, filled with humor and warmth, became an integral part of the Rio’s fun and lighthearted culture, fostering a sense of camaraderie among us.

He usually worked during the day, then relaxed with his beloved Budweisers at the Sportsman’s  Lounge down the street, where you could find him shooting pool. He was good enough to keep the  Buds flowing throughout the night.

We once sent Felipe back to his hometown in Texas for a vacation. Since he didn’t own a camera, he returned with a collection of postcards as souvenirs, saying he was glad to be back!

As a youth, Felipe played fast-pitch softball and even pitched for the Rio softball team a few times. The only catch? He pitched fast-pitch in a slow-pitch league!

Felipe also made a memorable appearance at our annual Christmas parties as “Felipe Claus,”  donning a Santa suit. However, after a few Budweisers, his Ho Ho Ho’s were about all he could manage.

Over time, Felipe transitioned from the dish room to sweeping the patio and keeping the crew entertained. Once, I overheard him telling someone he was Rio’s “security man.” His favorite phrase? “#1… Texas… Long time!”

Every year, we celebrate Felipe on the anniversary of his passing, remembering the jokester and lively friend he was. And in true Felipe fashion, we’re honoring his memory today with $1 Budweisers—his favorite drink. Raise a glass and toast to Felipe’s unforgettable spirit.

Our founder, Pat McGaughran, shares this tribute, fondly remembering Felipe’s humor, dedication, and the joy he brought to Rio.
